“You can have everything in life you want if you just help other people get what they want.” — Zig Ziglar
What if you could dissolve barriers, heal old wounds, and inspire action in others through the power of your words?
Conversational hypnosis lets you do just that by fostering an environment where positive change is not only possible but inevitable.
What’s more, this approach to communication can transform personal and professional relationships by helping you quickly build rapport and pave the way for deeper connections and mutual understanding.
Above all, this connection is not manipulative. It’s based on genuine empathy and understanding, allowing you to guide conversations in a way that feels natural and respectful. As a result, you’ll make others feel understood, in turn making them more likely to be open to your ideas and suggestions.
Whether in personal interactions, hypnosis, business or sales, conversational hypnosis gives you the ability to resonate with others on a subconscious level leading to more meaningful and productive outcomes.
What Is Conversational Hypnosis?
Imagine having a captivating conversation that motivates and inspires change, all without the other person ever realizing they’re being influenced. Pretty incredible, right?
That’s exactly what conversational hypnosis allows you to do. Conversational hypnosis, or covert hypnosis, operates on the principle of bypassing the conscious mind’s resistance to suggestion so you can engage directly with someone’s unconscious.
As a result, you’re able to guide their unconscious toward a desired outcome, all within the flow of a natural conversation allowing for a seamless blend of influence and empathy.
This method finds its roots in the work of Milton H. Erickson who demonstrated that indirect suggestions could be more effective than direct commands in therapeutic settings. As you probably know from personal experience, most people resist direct orders and advice. After all, no one likes to feel as if they’re being bossed around.
That’s what makes conversational hypnosis so effective – it allows you to covertly guide someone toward a desired outcome, all while enhancing your relationships, boosting your professional success, and contributing to the well-being of those around you.
But there’s one caveat: since Conversational Hypnosis gives you access to the deeper layers of someone’s mind allowing you to influence how they think and feel, it is crucial to use this skill with the intention of positively benefiting others.
If that sounds like your kind of mission, read on to discover how to easily master conversational hypnosis.
Core Conversational Hypnosis Techniques and Strategies
The foundation of conversational hypnosis lies in building rapport. And the key ingredient to building rapport is something called H+, a term exclusive to the Hypnosis Training Academy and central to all of our hypnosis training.
To put it simply, H+ is a method that ensures everything you do with hypnosis flows from a place of good intention.
This can only happen when you put aside your own thoughts and opinions, knowing they can get in the way of how you speak, behave and interact, and focus fully on helping the person in front of you. Do this, and others will be able to feel your positive energy and intent at both the conscious and unconscious level.

What is H+ and How It Makes You a Better Hypnotist
Apart from H+ you can use additional tools for building rapport such as mirroring body language, matching speech patterns, and demonstrating empathy.
Mirroring and Matching
Mirror and matching involves subtly copying the body language, speech patterns, and even breathing rhythms of the person you are communicating with. For example, if the person tends to speak slowly and softly, you adjust your speaking pace and volume to match theirs. This nonverbal alignment creates a subconscious sense of kinship and trust.
Pacing and Leading
Start by verbally acknowledging the current experience or emotions of the person, known as ‘pacing.’ Once rapport is established, you can ‘lead’ by introducing new ideas or suggestions.
For instance, if someone is feeling anxious, you might say, “I understand you’re feeling anxious right now, and that’s completely okay. Many find that with each breath, they can begin to feel a bit more relaxed and in control.”
Language Patterns and Suggestions
Mastering the art of suggestion involves using language that speaks directly to the subconscious mind. Techniques such as the Milton Model, named after Milton H. Erickson, utilize ambiguous and metaphorical language to facilitate change without resistance:
Ambiguity
The use of deliberately vague language forces the listener to search for meaning, therefore engaging the subconscious. An example could be, “And as you sit there, you might begin to notice a change, or maybe it won’t be noticeable until later.”
Metaphors
Telling stories or using metaphors that parallel the listener’s situation allows them to draw their own meanings and connections. For example, a therapist might tell a story about a caterpillar becoming a butterfly to symbolize a client’s potential for transformation.
Embedded Commands
These are directives hidden within a longer sentence, designed to be absorbed by the subconscious. For instance, “As you begin to feel more relaxed, you can find ways to make positive changes in your life.”
Speak Directly to the Unconscious With Strategic Storytelling
Milton Erickson was renowned for his innovative approach to delivering carefully crafted stories that would bypass the conscious mind’s defenses and speak directly to the subconscious, facilitating change and healing.
For example, one of Erickson’s most famous stories involves a young woman who was severely agoraphobic (afraid to leave her house).
Erickson visited her and began talking about a tomato plant. He meticulously described the process of a tomato seed’s growth, focusing on the natural and inevitable development stages of the plant—from a small seed to a mature plant bearing ripe tomatoes.
This story was a metaphor for personal growth and the natural capacity for change inherent in all living things, including the young woman. The detailed and engaging narrative of the tomato plant’s growth process encouraged the woman to see her own potential for change as natural and attainable, leading to a significant improvement in her condition.
Needless to say, this method can be particularly effective in therapeutic settings or negotiations, where direct suggestions might otherwise meet resistance.
